FASHION TAKES OVER THE CINEMATHEQUE
Jean-Paul Gaultier, great French couturier, has taken over the Cinémathèque Française since October 6th and that until January 16th 2022, in order to hold his exhibition CinéMode. Exhibition official, the couturier recounts, with this exhibition, the history of fashion linked with the one of cinema through movie extracts, photos, movie posters and costumes.
The stylist revisits what gave him the desire to pursue a career in fashion. Indeed, it is when watching the movie Falbalas by Jacques Becker that Jean-Paul Gaultier knew he had to work in the fashion industry. Ever since, he came across the cinema multiple times. Costume designer for several movie Directors, he has been nominated in the “Best costumes” category at the Cesar in 1997 for the movie The Fifth Element by Luc Besson.
FASHION AND CINEMA: A BEAUTIFUL LOVE STORY
This exhibition, which started the day after the end of the Paris Fashion Week, is the perfect occasion to rediscover timeless movies under a new light. Here, some costumes signed by Jean-Paul Gaultier, but also some from other great designers, are highlighted and put in context through excerpts, photographs, or movie posters, all under three axes which are dear to the designer: the mixture of the genres, futurism and the rebels.
Dresses of the greatest pin-ups Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot, Rocky’s shorts, the blue and red leotard of the famous superhero Superman or even haute couture pieces are to be discovered during this exhibition. This latest is also a highlight on the long collaboration between Jean-Paul Gaultier and the movie Director Pedro Almodovar for whom the French couturier took the role of costume designer in his spare time.
A perfect exhibition for young and elders alike that took us back to the classics of cinema and allowed us to discover more about on this constant love between fashion and the 7th Art. To be checked out at the Cinémathèque Française until January 16th.
