Rich of history, rich of works of art, the Musée d'Orsay, located on the left bank of the Seine, is a cultural place in the heart of the French capital.
Before being a museum, it was originally a railway station. It was in 1900 that the Orsay station was built to host the Universal Exhibition in Paris. This place has become one of the most beautiful of Paris by its architectural style. In 1986, President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing decided to transform the railway station into a museum of 19th century arts and officially inaugurated it.
Since, the Musée d'Orsay has become known throughout the world for being a mainstay of Impressionist art collections, receiving an average of 3 million visitors each year. It also brings together all the artistic creation of the Western world from 1848 to 1914. It is a period of history where society faced a multitude of upheavals, which had repercussions on the artistic movements (from neoclassicism to symbolism collections).
There is something for everyone here, as you will find paintings, decorative arts, photographs, sculptures, pastels... Impressionism is suggested in all its forms.
